USO-Metro offers free furnished apartment units to military service members and their families who are in extreme financial hardship, or to families of service members who are critically or terminally ill and require treatment at area military hospitals. These units are available for up to 60 days at no cost. Each family is referred to USO-Metro by a senior command representative, military social service agency, or by a military patient representative. Each case must meet eligibility requirements established by USO-Metro and military officials. For more information on our Emergency Housing Program, call USO-Metro at 703-696-2552 or contact your Senior Enlisted Advisor.
*These apartments are made available free-of-charge due to the generous support of Equity Residential Properties, Oakwood Worldwide, and Southern Management Corporation.
USO-Metro provides food and food certificates to military families
in need. For more information, please call (703) 696-0958.
The holidays are a special time at the USO. Working with the area
commands, the USO of Metropolitan Washington presents a number of
holiday activities for the troops and their families.
The annual USO-Metro Mother's Day contest awards a $300 cash prize
to the person who writes the best essay entitled "Why my Mother
Should be Honored on Mother's Day." The winner also receives a trip
to DC and is honored at a reception on Mother's Day.
Each year at Christmas, USO-Metro holds programs for the children.
Working with the Cartoon Network we present a series of breakfasts
with Santa and the "Toons on Tour" characters. With Health
Net we host a holiday party exclusively for children that brings
a bit of Wonderland to the Washington area. We also participate
in the annual tree lighting ceremonies at Fort Myer and Fort McNair.
Also during Christmas USO-Metro, working in conjunction with generous
hotels in the Washington area, provides hundreds of donated hotel
rooms for visiting family members of personnel stationed here in
the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan area. Call (703) 696-0958
for more information.
The USO of Metropolitan Washington is proud to ease the burden
of service members and their families who are recovering and receiving
treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the National Naval
Medical Center.
As the patients recover, USO-Metro arranges excursions outside
the hospital to activities such as area sporting events and concerts.
For the patients who are not able to leave the hospital, USO-Metro
arranges celebrity handshake tours to boost the morale of these
patients. Celebrities visit the patients who are interested in meeting
them, take time to talk to them, answer their questions, listen
to their stories, and pose for pictures with patients and family
members.
Each year, USO-Metro delivers "The World's Longest Valentine" to
the Washington Veteran's Hospital as part of the National Salute
to Hospitalized Veterans. We also arrange celebrity visits to the
Soldiers' and Airmen's Home.
USO-Metro is committed to supporting the hospitals in their efforts
for those receiving treatment from the war and their family members,
and is proud to adjust their support as requested by the hospital
commands. Call (703) 862-6391 for more information.
If your organization would like to provide services to service members
